CROSS-TRADE LOGISTICS FAQs

Led by more than 20 years of freight-forwarding experience, Scanlon Freight supports businesses with complex cross-trade movements worldwide. Find answers to the most common questions about international cross-trade logistics below.

What does cross-trade logistics mean?

Cross-trade logistics is the movement of goods directly between two countries without the shipment entering the seller’s home country.

For example, a UK company may purchase goods from a supplier in China and arrange delivery directly to its customer in Germany. Scanlon Freight coordinates the supplier, carrier, customs documentation and final delivery through one accountable point of contact.

Cross-trade logistics is suitable for many commercial shipments moving by air, road or sea, including urgent, high-value, temperature-sensitive and specialist cargo.Suitability depends on the goods, origin, destination, transport mode and regulatory requirements.

Restricted goods, dangerous goods, controlled products and shipments requiring special licences must be assessed before transport is arranged.

We coordinate with trusted customs partners at the shipment’s origin and destination to confirm the correct customs process before the goods move.

This includes checking commodity codes, customs values, country of origin, Incoterms, importer details, licences and supporting documentation. Customs declarations can require information including the customs procedure, commodity code, consignor and consignee, packaging, transport costs, valuation and relevant certificates or licences.

The importer, exporter or authorised representative remains responsible for providing complete and accurate information. HMRC also confirms that businesses retain responsibility for customs due diligence when appointing an agent.

The main risks include incorrect documentation, unclear Incoterms, customs delays, unexpected duties and taxes, unsuitable routing, missed handovers and poor shipment visibility.

Cross-trade movements may also be delayed when an importer of record has not been confirmed or when commodity codes, customs values, licences or origin information are incomplete.

Scanlon Freight reduces these risks by checking the movement requirements in advance, coordinating each party and providing proactive updates from collection through to final delivery.

In most cases, an eligible importer must be identified in the destination country before the goods can be customs cleared.

The importer is generally responsible for the import declaration, duties, taxes, permits and local compliance obligations. The precise requirements differ by country, commodity and agreed Incoterm.

Where goods enter Great Britain, the importing business may also require a GB EORI number. GOV.UK states that an EORI may be needed when goods move between Great Britain and another country, including EU member states.

Scanlon Freight will confirm the importer and customs requirements with the customer and destination agent before the shipment is booked.
