Customs Clearance F.A.Q’s

Over the past 20 years we have helped hundreds of businesses with their customs clearance solutions. Here are some of the most common questions we hear. Or you can ask us direct by clicking the button below.

What is customs clearance?

Customs clearance is compulsory for all goods entering or leaving the United Kingdom, it allows HM Revenue & Customs to account for any Customs Duty and VAT on import shipments, it also monitors and provides statistical data for exports from the UK to other trading countries around the world.

What are the advantages of using a customs clearance agent?

Customs agents or brokers can facilitate a professional service between the importer / exporter and HM Revenue & Customs. They can provide you with expert advice on any customs regulations and tariff classification of the goods you are importing or exporting, as well as any preferential origin that may allow you to import your goods at a lower Customs Duty rate.

Customs agents have direct links to HM Revenue & Customs, which means that we can speed up the process of clearing your cargo, alleviating any demurrage & detention of freight which is held at a port or airport.

Do you customs clear cargo at all UK ports and airports?

Yes, we have access to all airports and ports in the UK for clearing shipments for import or export.

How long does it take to customs clear goods?

This can vary depending on the type of shipment, what type of goods are entering or leaving the country or have any type of license or special procedure. Customs will sometimes want to have a physical examination of the documents or goods, which would then add additional time onto the process, however as a rule we would allow 2 hours for air freight clearance, 4 hours for sea & road freight clearance.

What documents will I require?

The standard documents we will require for customs clearance are as follows:

  • Bill of lading, Airway Bill or CMR
  • Commercial invoice
  • Packing list

Other documents required may consist of:

  • Certificate of Origin
  • Preference Certificate
  • Health Certificate
  • COA
  • Organic Certificate

It is essential to check the government website for any specific requirements prior to sending your goods, click here for our customs compliance checklist.
