If you’ve ever imported or exported goods internationally, you’ve probably come across something called an HS Code. Short for Harmonised System Code, this little number plays a big role in global trade, and getting it wrong can cause serious customs headaches.
Here’s everything you need to know about HS Codes, why they matter, and how to use them correctly. I cover it in this video and you can read more below.
What is an HS Code?
An HS Code (Harmonised System Code) is a globally standardised numerical code used to classify traded products. Developed by the World Customs Organisation (WCO), the system allows over 200 countries to describe and identify goods in a uniform way.
Each code is usually 6 to 10 digits long, and it tells customs authorities exactly what type of goods are being moved. For example:
- 9403.60.10 = Wooden furniture for office use
- 8517.13.00 = Smartphones
The first 6 digits are international and used worldwide. The remaining digits vary depending on the importing country’s requirements.
Why Do You Need It?

Here’s why getting your HS Code right is critical:
- Correct Customs Duty & VAT
Your HS Code determines how much duty and VAT you’ll pay. Misclassification can result in overpaying tax – or underpaying, which could lead to fines and investigations.
- Smooth Customs Clearance
Using the wrong code can delay shipments, trigger inspections, or cause goods to be seized.
- Trade Agreements & Duty Relief
The right HS Code is key to claiming benefits under trade agreements (like the UK-EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement). If your goods qualify under the Rules of Origin, you could be exempt from certain tariffs.
- Import/Export Restrictions
HS Codes can also be linked to controlled goods, which may require special licences or certifications. Declaring the correct code helps avoid compliance breaches.
How to Find the Right HS Code
- Use the UK Trade Tariff tool on gov.uk
- Ask your freight forwarder (like us – we’re experts at classification)
- Refer to product data sheets, technical specs, or supplier declarations
- Stay consistent – different codes across shipments raise red flags
